What is the Mastering process at Minimal System Instruments?

We believe “mastering” to be the process of taking a mix and preparing it for distribution to your audience. At Minimal System Instruments this involves the following stages:

  1. Acheiving a 'loud' yet dynamic sound - This is where we take a good mix (usually in the form of a stereo file) and put the final touches on it. This can involve adjusting levels and in general “sweetening” the mix. Think of it as the final coat of polish, or the difference between a good sounding mix and a professional sounding master. This process commonly involves adding broad equalization, multiband compression, harmonic excitation, loudness maximization. You could actually refer to this stage as “pre-mastering”.

  2. Consistency across your Album or EP - Consideration has to be made for how the individual tracks of a CD or digital release work together when played one after another. Levels should be matched and there needs to be a consistent sound.

  3. Preparation for duplication and digital distribution - The final step involves preparing the song or sequence of songs for distribution. This step varies depending on the on the intended delivery format. If you track is to be released on CD it can mean converting to 16 bit/44.1 kHz audio through resampling and dithering. If the track is to be released digitally via online music stores then we convert to 24 bit .wav files.

Placing Your Order

If you are interested in using Minimal System Instruments for your mastering needs and would like to place your order please refer to the below steps:

  1. Contact us using the form below detailing your requirements - How many tracks you would like mastered, what file formats do you require and any other relevant information.
  2. We will respond to you very quickly with a proposal detailing exactly how to submit your audio, an accurate cost of the mastering process (Depending on your requirements that you sent us).
  3. If you are happy with the price you submit your audio to us and make the payment via PayPal.
  4. Within 2-3 days we will send you through your mastered track(s) for approval.
  5. If you are happy with your tracks then that is it! if there anything you are not happy with we will fix for free.
  6. If you are happy with the service we provide please send through a testimonial for us to display on our web site. All testimonials sent through to us receive a free Minimal System Instruments VST plugin.

Would you like a demo?

If you would like to hear a demo of our mastering service simply get in touch using the form on the 'Contact Us' page. Make sure you state in the message that you are interested in having a mastering demo produced. We will quickly get back to you with details of what to do next. Usual practice is we produce a one minute long demo of your track so you get an accurate feel of how the finished product will sound.
